Do we truly know God?
Sermon by Ps. Daisy – Feb 20, 2022
Life as a Christian means being in a state of battle always. Slacking is not an option. In the journey towards eternal life to know God, one must rise above their burdens (leave self-centeredness) and cut constantly through the noise (created by choices offered by this world) (Ref.- Jeremiah 6:16)
So, what does the Bible say about knowing God? Some references:
- The reliance on wisdom, greatness and wealth of the world is futile. True knowledge comes from diligently seeking God – understanding God’s way (Ref. – Jeremiah 9:23-24)
- God wants us to focus on him even when in chaos (Ref.- Psalm- 46: 10)
- It is critical to have personal relationship with God. Jesus prayed that everyone would come to know Him and His Father through this fellowship (Ref: John 17:3)
- Suffering, committing to bring an end to our sinful ways– is a part of this journey (Ref: Philippians 3:10)
One may wonder what purpose the knowledge about God serves. This knowledge is to
- Help one accept life as it comes, even if all our prayers mightn’t have been answered, knowing that God loves us and has a purpose for each event of our lives
- Guide one’s stay on this earth in a way which pleases God and makes us humble (Ref- 1 Corinthian 8:1-2)
- Encourage us to give up our idols in our life and obey God (Ref- Psalm 119:1-2,5)
There’s a difference between ‘knowledge of God’ and ‘knowing God’. One may know a lot about God & godliness (Knowledge of scripture, verses, laws, etc.), but may not know God in a personal and intimate manner. This experience surpasses all our earlier knowledge about this subject. Some of the evidence of knowing God in one’s life are as follows:
- Have a great passion for God which surpasses all other passions (Ref- Daniel- 11:32)
- Hold the conviction about the immense power of God, knowing that the circumstances of our lives are a speck in time, which is in God’s control (Ref- Daniel 2:20-22)
- Show great boldness for God, in proclaiming Gospel, even in the shadow of persecution (Ref – Acts 5:29)
- Have great contentment in God in all seasons of their lives (Ref: Daniel 3:16-18)
To summarise, knowing God is a continuous journey which is done by meditating on His words and doing what the word commands (Psalm 1:1-2)
